Fortum turns waste into energy in Lithuania
Lehtikuva / Vesa Moilanen Fortum takes part in improving the Baltic Sea environment by turning Klaipeda’s waste into energyThe new power plant will be fuelled by municipal and industrial waste and biomass. The production capacity will be approximately 50 megawatts of heat and 20 megawatts of electricity. The district heating produced will be sold to Klaipedos Energija and the electricity to the Lithuanian national grid.
The district heating produced by the new plant will replace the separate heat production of the old natural gas fired heating plants of Klaipedos Energija. The transfer to combined heat and power generation will increase the efficiency of the plant’s energy generation considerably when compared to the previous system. Also the CO2 emissions of the area’s heat production will reduce significantly.
Fortum’s new combined heat and power plant is the Baltic region’s first waste-to-energy plant and it will have an essential role in the waste management of Klaipeda region. Thanks to the new plant there will be a significant reduction of waste deposited in the region’s landfills.
