Fortum develops a wind power park in Kalajoki

Tekes / Matias Uusikylä The annual production of the new wind power park planned to be built in Kalajoki is equivalent to the energy consumption of over 15 000 houses heated by electricity.
Finnish energy company Fortum is developing a wind power project in the Western Finnish municipality of Kalajoki. According to the preliminary plan the area will accommodate 30-50 two to six megawatt wind power plants. The plant’s annual energy production would correspond the energy consumption of over 15 000 houses heated by electricity.

Fortum has signed land lease agreements for 450 hectares in the area and is still examining possibilities to expand the area. Preliminary studies indicate that the selected area is well-suited, both technically and environmentally, for wind power production.

Precise wind condition measurements in the area will begin still this year. Fortum will also start working with the municipality of Kalajoki in drafting the component master plan required for the project.

An environmental impact assessment in accordance with the Finnish EIA Act will also be made for the project if so required by the contact authority North Ostrobothnia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. The preliminary plan is to connect the wind power plants to the grid at the Kalajoki substation.

If further analyses indicate that the project is feasible, the wind power park could be built in 2013-2014 at the earliest.
