The Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Helsinki and South African North-West University have cooperated in developing a multifaceted atmosphere research station east of Johannesburg in South Africa.

– Especially in developing countries ever bigger part of the population is moving into cities, so the consequences of the already soaring carbon emissions of urban areas will be emphasized in future, notes Lauri Laakso, Researcher at the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

The measuring capacity development project, which was initially launched in 2005, was expanded in the end of the summer to cover also the interplay between the atmosphere and vegetation. Researchers at the research station evaluate for instance megacity Johannesburg’s climate impacts and air pollution effects on the ecosystem of the Southern African grain production region.

The research area to the east of Johannesburg enables research on pollution both on the clean savannah and in the metropolis of 15 million people. The atmosphere research will investigate also the oxidation of particles, particles from savannah fires and the climate warming effect of soot.

In addition, the entire continent’s first mass spectrometer for real-time measurement of the chemical composition of aerosol particles has been installed at the research station. In the future researchers strive to understand also the impacts of climate change on dry ..
