Finnish wollastonite strengthens the international automotive industry

Nordkalk The main market for wollastonite is overseas, especially in Central Europe.
Wollastonite is a rare acicular mineral, which occurs naturally near limestone deposits and is used to strengthen the filling agents of rubber and plastic. Nordkalk has mined rare wollastonite in Lappeenranta since the beginning of the 1970s. Lappeenranta wollastonite is used for instance in plastics in the automotive industry all over the world.

– Wollastonite gives strength to plastic and improves its scratch resistance, which is why it is used in vehicle parts. Demand is rising and so we have begun to develop our wollastonite products for this segment, says Harri Koivisto, Production Director for Nordkalk plants in Lappeenranta.

Nordkalk has refined wollastonite into ten different products. The newest, Harwoll, was developed in a project funded by the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, Tekes. According to Koivisto, it was a major project where the innovation was to develop and apply a new technique for micro-milling. The new technique helps give wollastonite its desired acicularity.

Nordkalk cooperates with Tekes also on another project, where new surfacing technology is developed for wollastonite.

Nordkalk employs approximately 1200 people. The company operates in eight countries.
