Good News from Tue, 01 September, 2009:

Finnish spectacles into recycling in Kenya

Worldvision Sivilin Birir is one of the lucky receivers of donated glasses in Kenya.

Finnish opticians and ophthalmologists carried out vision test in Kenya last week. Also glasses donated by Finnish people have been distributed in Membeki. During the first two days already nearly 600 vision tests were done.

This year's vision care trip is already the third of its kind. It has been accomplished by Cazze and Synsam opticians in cooperation with World Vision Finland. The donated glasses have been received by opticians throughout Finland.

Pius Tou says that after receiving a donated pair of spectacles he can practice his profession again. Pius, who used to work as a driver, has not been able to work because of his weak eyesight.

Kenya has about 39 million inhabitants. However, there are only a few dozens of ophthalmologists. Because of this and the high costs involved in buying glasses, many of those in need of glasses have to struggle without them. Also eye diseases caused by exposure to contaminated water are common in Kenya.

In addition to vision tests, the group of ophthalmologists carries out cataract surgery. Also those operated on a year ago have visited the clinic for check-ups.
