Finnish researchers receive a significant international award

The academia professors Kari Alitalo from the University of Helsinki and Seppo Ylä-Herttuala from the University of Kuopio have received the international In Bev- Baillet Latour International Health Prize – science award. The prize has a value of 200 000 Euros and was awarded in Brussels at the end of April.

The award was based on the two men’s groundbreaking research on the re-growth of blood and lymphatic vessels and their regulation as a possibility in the treatment of heart and cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

The academia professor Kari Alitalo is the Head of Molecular Cancer Biology research programme, and has gained reputation specifically for his research on the growth of blood and lymphatic vessels. The research team of professor Alitalo is working towards developing several new types of cancer medication.

The academia professor Seppo Ylä-Herttuala from Kuopio University is the Head of the Finnish Academy research unit, which investigates heart and cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes. Professor Ylä-Herttuala is a pioneer in his research on heart and cardiovascular diseases, gene therapy for brain cancer and virus-mediated gene transfer technology.

The InBev-Baillet Latour Health Prize was awarded for the first time in 1979. It is awarded annually to researchers, who are commendable in their research on the application of medicine and medicinal practices. The prize is awarded according to the decision by an honourable jury of science specialists.
