Finnish organic produce to beguile German taste buds

Valio Finnish food exporters aim to enter the 5.8 billion euro organic market of Germany.
The German-Finnish Chamber of Commerce DFHK has launched a new food product export project, enhancing the export of Finnish food to Germany. The project operates through two export chains, one of which is designated for the export of ordinary food products, and the other specifically for Finnish organic produce. Once running, both chains will have space for 4-6 companies.

The import of German food products to Finland is manifold when compared to the export of Finnish food to Germany. Over half of Finnish exports consist of raw materials, mainly oats and wheat. According to a survey carried out by the DFHK, Finnish food producers have not utilized the huge possibilities that the German food market could potentially offer.

The annual turnover of the German food industry was 155 billion euros in 2008. Germany is also the biggest market for organic products, with a turnover of 5.8 billion euros. The organic market is estimated to grow by 10-15 percent every year.

The German market is not as centralized as the Finnish market, although some chaining has taken place in the past few years. Also the share of German brands has grown significantly. The number of organic supermarkets has also increased in the country.

Finland has a number of assets on the German market, such as good image, healthy nature, top class food research and high quality of the Finnish products. Finland and organic produce are a natural association for the Germans.
