According to a research project of Forestcluster Ltd. the Finnish forest industry might have future growth potential also outside of its core expertise.

Researchers from the Aalto University, Stockholm School of Economics and University of Helsinki have mapped for instance the commercialization expertise of the forest cluster, consumer demands of developing countries and youth media behaviour.

The research results have been very promising and through sparring also new business ideas have been generated. According to the research expertise within the Finnish forest cluster is very strong compared to international competitors in the field.

The researchers of the year-long interdisciplinary research project were supported by experienced company representatives on an international level.

Academic research projects are only the first phase of the project. CEO of Forestcluster Ltd. Christine Hagström-Näsi notes that the refinement of innovations can not be dumped onto the researchers.

– The next phase of project will see the joining of forest cluster companies in the spirit of open innovation. The research results will then be developed further into commercially viable innovations. Hopefully by the end of the year we will be able to report the results of the next phase: new, company-specific or jointly promoted development projects, says Hagström-Näsi.
