Finnish expedition conquers Mont Blanc by sauna
Helo The specially manufactured wood-fired oven warmed up the Finnish expedition on top of Mont Blanc. The very first sauna on Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, was pitched in 4,810 metres on August 21st, when a Finnish expedition took a sauna bath on top of the mountain.
The weather was favourable early in the morning when Kari Härkönen, Tuomas Poikela and Sami Vähänen began their ascent of the mountain. The expedition had practiced both, mounting of the sauna and carrying of the sauna equipment, in the demanding mountain climate.
The specially manufactured four kilo wood-burning oven, the fruit of product development work by the leading Finnish sauna producer Helo and the engineering company Aaro Peltoniemi, functioned perfectly and the carefully chosen wood burnt well in the high altitude.
The expedition had a sauna while marveling in the glorious mountain scenery, and washed up in the snow in sunny weather at degrees five below zero. The expedition descended the mountain soon after the exquisite sauna bath, for depending on the snow conditions the descent down the mountain is advisable by afternoon.
The exploit was a positive endeavor to promote Finnish sauna culture internationally. The project was supported by Helo, the engineering company Aaro Peltoniemi, Savotta and Scandinavian Outdoor Store.
