The Finnish Association for Environmental Education has awarded the acknowledged international Green Flag to 25 daycare centres, 50 elementary schools, three comprehensive schools, four high schools and three vocational schools in Finland.

The Green Flag schools belong to an environmental education program, known internationally as Eco-Schools. There are 244 active Green Flag schools and daycare centres in Finland, with over 65 000 children, youth and adults involved. On a global scale there are 32 000 participating schools with a total of nine million pupils.

The participating daycare centres, schools and institutions have made a commitment to reduce their environmental load and implement environmental education as part of their everyday activities. Children and youth take an active role in planning and executing the activities, as well as evaluating the outcomes.

Wonderful. I am an environmental educator in the US, and I really do support public education. But Finland sounds like it is light years ahead of us, both in terms of education in general and environmental education. Please keep it up, we need a positive model!
