Finnish design in spotlight in Madrid

Lehtikuva / Markku Ulander Finnish architectural classic, architect and designer Alvar Aalto, is in spotlight in Madrid in November.

November is the month of Finnish design, architecture and creativtiy in the Spanish capital city of Madrid. Finnish design and architecture are on display in a number of the city's central culture and exhibition spaces, when Med del Diseño Finlandés - design month brings a comperehensive overview of Finnish expertise.

The Finnish Institute in Madrid together with the Embassy of Finland in Spain and the City of Madrid have prepared a grand repertoire including exhibitions, seminars and other events. The City of Madrid takes care of the visibility of the event for instance by putting up numerous street adverts. The entire design initiative has been enabled by cooperation between the Finnish Ministry of Education, the City of Helsinki, Finpro and Visit Finland.

The main event of the design month is organized by Helsinki Design Week, which exhibits brand new Finnish design in an interactive exhibition at the Matadero Madrid Cultural Center. In addition to Helsinki Design Week, the Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo will ship two versatile design exhibitions to Madrid, one of which has been effectuated in cooperation with Grafia. The Museum of Finnish Architecture and Helsinki University of Technology will also exhibit urban planning and timber architecture in Madrid this autumn.

A Finnish design icon Alvar Aalto holds a leading role in Madrid by featuring in two exhibitions. The Alvar Aalto Foundation and Museum present Aalto's unique dimensions as an architect and furniture designer. Design Museum will also exhibit an overview of the 50-year history of Marimekko's textile creations at the Clothing Museum in Madrid.

On top of all that, this November in Madrid offers workshops, conferences, seminars and multi-artistic events, which present Finnish design and art at its best. The programme of related events will also be impressive. Finnish theatre will be represented by Otso Kautto's Quo Vadis theatre group and Finnish modern cinematography by a programme funded by the Finnish Film Foundation.
