Finnish companies take climate change seriously

Finnish companies are well aware of climate change, reveals a new survey carried out by the international auditing and professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. Most of the participating companies have improved their energy and material efficiency. Half of all companies scrutinize the carbon and water footprints of their products.

The survey investigated how climate change affects business operations of companies. Leaders of 62 major Finnish companies took part in the survey. Less than a fifth of the participants had not evaluated the impact of climate change, or done anything to prevent it. 89 per cent of the participating companies had improved their energy efficiency.

Out of the participating companies 71 per cent had improved their material efficiency. From an international viewpoint, the percentages were remarkably high. Carbon footprint had been taken into consideration by half of the companies and water footprint by a quarter.

As surprising as it may sound, nearly half of the participating companies in the survey had noticed that climate change has a positive impact on the value of their business and the demand of their products. Therefore, climate change is more of a business opportunity than a risk. Promising possibilities are connected to the development of markets, technologies and legislations, which support new business activities.

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers nearly all Finnish companies take into consideration ethical aspects when choosing contractors and business partners.
