Finnish building industry revives timber building

Interest on timber apartment buildings has been revived all over Finland. New building projects have been launched for instance in Helsinki, Mikkeli, Kouvola, Saarijärvi and Turku.

According to the Finnish Forest Industries Federation the previous large-scale timber building boom took place in the 1990s. The apartment buildings built then have received positive feedback from their residents. The building projects have also proven to be economically competitive.

The wood industry improves the services of the building industry by developing new solutions for the construction of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly apartment buildings. The development work is enhanced by a uniform industrial standard, which makes the construction and design of timber apartment buildings easier.

Compared to the construction of concrete apartment buildings, the building site phase of a similar construction in timber is significantly faster. A timber apartment building can be erected in half a year, while concrete building takes twice as long, usually a whole year. This lightens the budget designated for the project’s building site phase, thus improving the overall profitability of the project.

The development work is trusted to bring about fresh timber building innovations, which will be attractive also internationally. Finnish timber architecture already attracts international interest.

The Finnish Forest Industries Federation emphasises that Finland’s progressive building regulations and the country’s high-class image in construction will have a positive impact on the export of building products.
