Finnish brain stimulation system acquires trading license in the US

Nexstim NBS system gives a series of short magnetic impulses, which help in measuring the reactions of organs and muscles in the brain.

Finnish medical technology company Nexstim Oy has acquired a US trading license for its Navigated Brain Stimulation System. Nextim Oy develops and commercializes diagnostic and therapy applications for the brain.

Using transcranial magnetic stimulation, guided by standard MR-image data, Nexstim developed NBS system, the first non-invasive direct technique for functional mapping of the motor cortex. Light magnetic impulses are sent to the cortex, which then measure the reactions of the muscles, brains and other organs. According to these reactions an interpretation can be made whether nerve signals are transmitted normally to the other areas of the body or not. Nexstim has been reported to be the only company in the world, which has managed to achieve this.

The NBS system has multiple investigational neurodiagnostic applications as well as promising future applications in neurotherapy. It can also be utilized in testing the influence of medicament and therapy on the brain. According to Nexstim in the future the system can be utilized in a number of different fields, such as in rehabilitation after a stroke and as a treatment for severe depression and tinnitus.

Nextim has delivered over 40 systems to hospitals in Japan, Taiwan, the United States and Europe. As the practical applications increase, the market growth is expected to increase very strongly in the future.
