Good News from Tue, 16 February, 2010:

Finland’s only airlaid fibre fabric factory opens in Iitti

Lacell Oy Minister of Trade and Industry Mauri Pekkarinen opens Lacell’s new factory in Iitti.
The brand new factory of Lacell Oy, the producer of airlaid fibre fabric, was opened in Iitti, Finland on the 10th of February. The construction of the factory was completed in the end of 2009. The factory’s produce is exported mainly to the Baltic countries, Central Europe and Russia.

Airlaid fibre fabric is used as a raw material for instance in the production of a variety of hygiene products, filters and packaging and setting materials. Airlaid technology was developed in Finland in the early 80s. The production was eventually sold to the United States, which means that Lacell is Finland’s only producer of airlaid materials. On a global scale, Lacell is situated among medium-sized producers of the fabric.

Lacell considers the new production as a good example of the potential of specialisation within the paper industry, and believes that the future prospects for a specialist company focusing on a narrow product range are promising. According to the company the demand will grow by 10 percent every year, and for instance in Russia even faster.

– Although the basic concept of different manufacturers is pretty much the same, the latest application will always be advantaged in comparison to competitors. We are able to produce tailor made specialised products, change our production line more flexibly and control our production process better than many of our competitors. Also our clients are in constant transformation, where success requires even more competitive raw materials, says CEO of Lacell Oy Risto Tamminen.

The 18-million euro factory investment will generate 45 new jobs in Iitti.
