Finland wins four medals at International Chemistry Olympiad

Finnish students won four medals at the 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad in Tokyo, Japan. The youth achieved Finland’s best results in ten years - the last four medals were earned in 2000.

The silver medal went to Jarkko Järvelä from Karkkila. Bronze was earned by this year’s baccalaureates Jari Huisman from Jyväskylä and Suvi Klapuri from Vaasa, and a second year secondary school student Oscar Kivinen from Helsinki. The youngsters were trained by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Helsinki.

The Chemistry Olympiad is an international chemistry competition for youth under the age of 20. This year’s 42nd competition received participants from approximately 70 different countries. The top five contestants came from China, Russia, South Korea, Austria and Iran.
