Finland tops Prosperity Index 2009

Finland is the world's most prosperous nation according to this year's Prosperity Index.

Finland's ranking improved from last year's third place. Last year's number one, Australia dropped this year to the sixth place, while Austria, which ranked second last year, dropped to the 15th place.

Finland is followed by Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The results of this year's Prosperity Index, which have been compiled by the London-based research centre Legatum, were initially published by the Financial Times.

In addition to monetary matters, Legatum's index takes into consideration also democracy, governance, public health and safety.

Four out five of the 20 highest ranking countries are in Europe and North America. The United States ranked ninth, thus beating for instance Great Britain, Germany and France.
