MEK / Pekka Antikainen

A new Finnish fishing portal has been launched in www.visitfinland.com/fishing. The website introduces Finland's fishing destinations, fish species and fishing customs and services, as well as providing background information for those who are planning their fishing trip. The website which has been realized by the Finnish Tourist Board MEK serves both Finnish and foreign tourists. In the future it will be the most important international marketing medium in promoting fishing tourism in Finland.

So far the website is available in Finnish and English. Its Russian version will be launched early next year. Eventually the website will be available in all ten of the portal's languages.

Services required on fishing trips can also be booked directly through the website. After having a fishing experience Our Finland -community platform provides the traveler a place for sharing their experiences with other enthusiasts through stories, photos and videos. In future the website will be replenished with introductions to new areas, water bodies and services.

The portal highlights especially whitefish and naturally breeding fish species, such as pike, zander, perch and grayling. These species are widely spread in different water bodies of Finland and easy to fish, with a high probability of a good catch. A meter long pike and a grayling weighing a kilogram are giant fish for many foreign fishermen. Finland has also an asset of extensive water bodies, versatility and the possibility of offering the fisher a quiet, solitary fishing experience while being surrounded by Finland's spectacular nature.

According to the latest Border Interview Survey, which was carried out by Statistics Finland and the Finnish Tourist Board MEK in 2008, nearly 300.000 foreign travelers fished during their stay in Finland. Fishing was preeminently the most popular summer activity among international visitors in Finland. There is an estimated 60-70 million fishing enthusiasts in Europe and Russia.
