Finland is among the first four countries to take part in an international research, which evaluates the role of technology in innovative teaching and learning. The research project analyses the impact of information and communication technology in teaching and learning in schools and within the education system.

In addition to Finland, the Innovative Teaching and Learning (ITL) Research project, which belongs to Partners in Learning program by Microsoft, will be implemented in Indonesia, Russia and Senegal. In the future the research project will expand also to other countries. Microsoft sponsors the project by approximately a million dollars every year.

– Recent international comparisons have indicated that different countries have invested strongly on computers and Internet connections. However, the accessibility to technology has not sufficiently transformed the educational methods used in schools, or even put into effect a large scale use of technology, says Research Professor Marja Kankaanranta from the University of Jyväskylä. Kankaanranta is in charge of implementing the project in Finland.

During the first year 600 teachers and over 40 schools from different parts of Finland will take part in the research. Also school principals, executive leaders in educational administration and experts will be interviewed.

The international coordination of the project is carried out by Stanford Research Institute. In Finland the responsible party is Agora Center at the University of Jyväskylä, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Microsoft Finland.
