Good News from Tue, 14 April, 2009:

Finland excels in biofuel production

Stora Enso and Neste Oil are in the process of opening a test plant for the production of timber derivate raw material for bio-diesel. It will be located in Varkaus. Similar pioneer project has been started with another timber producer, UPM, which however is not affiliated with an oil company as a business partner.

Neste refinery in Sköldvik has been operating the first NExBTL plant for two years. The second refinery with a capacity of 170 000 tons will open this summer in the west-coast town of Porvoo. Neste Oil will also build massive 800 000 ton production plants in Singapore and Rotterdam, near to its potential markets.

The peat industry company Vapo is currently researching the possibility of using peat as raw material for bio-diesel. The oil company St1 has recently informed of its intensions of producing bio-ethanol from domestic waste.

If Vapo realizes its plans of opening another manufacturing centre and the leading Finnish timber industry giants place all the energy timber for bio-diesel production, there is a possibility that Finland may become the producer of over million tons of biofuel. The amount is more than twice than Finland’s own fuel consumption.
