Finatex project enhances clothing and textile trade between Finland and Russia

Finnish Catwalk Scanfotos/Leena Aro Finatex reports that in 2008 the Finnish textile and clothing industry exported over 140 million Euro worth of products to Russia.
The Federation of Finnish Textiles and Clothing Industries Finatex has launched a three-year project to enhance the position of Finnish SMBs in the Russian market. In addition to clothing and textiles the project encompasses shoes, bags and accessories.

To support the project Finatex has commissioned a market survey which forecasts the future of the Russian clothing market and the possibilities of Finnish companies in the Northwest Russian market.

According to the survey Russians consider Finnish clothing to be of high quality, functional and well suited for the climate. The images fit especially well to sports and leisure clothing. However, Finnish clothing brands are still not very well known.

Finnish producers of textile, clothing, shoes and leather, who took part in the survey in late 2009, expressed most uncertainty about distribution and partners in the Russian market.

The Director of Finatex, Satu Mehtälä says that the survey gives a good beginning to the project between the two neighboring countries. She encourages more SMBs to take part in the initiative.

– I believe that the companies taking part in the initiative will certainly benefit from it. Such operations are best developed on well researched body of information, says Mehtälä.
