Failure day is a reminder of successes
LEHTIKUVA/KIMMO MÄNTYLÄ Among others, Rovio’s Mighty Eagle Peter Vesterbacka told yesterday of his failures at Aalto Venture Garage.— Finland needs a culture that allows people to fail, explained Petri Vilén from the Boardman Tulenkantajat group.
The tradition of Failure Day began last year from a few local events and it has now gone national with the main emphasis being on sharing experiences. The day was celebrated through events, at the workplace, in homes and on the web.
The main venue for the event in Helsinki was the Aalto Venture Garage in Otaniemi where among those telling about their failures was Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka, Pekka Viljainen who left his management role at Tieto Oyj last year and the leading IT figure Taneli Tikka. On the event’s pages online, those sharing their views on failure included Jorma Ollila of Nokia, the world championship ice hockey team coach Jukka Jalonen, Social Democrat party secretary Mikael Jungner and Minister of Economic Affairs Jyri Häkämies.
Aaltoes is an association founded by students of the Aalto University while Boardman Tulenkantajat is a network comprising young entrepreneurs from Boardman Oy which specializes in developing Finnish business capabilities. As well as the celebrations in Helsinki, the event was marked in Turku, Tampere, Oulu, Lappeenranta, Jyväskylä and Pietarsaari. The aim is to have the event recognized by 2020 as an official flag day.
