Eva Biaudet awarded in the US for her work against human trafficking
AP/ LEHTIKUVA/ MANUEL BALCE CENETA Eva Biaudet received the 2011 Hero Acting to End Modern Day Slavery award from Hillary Clinton in Washington on June 27th.This recognition of her work took place at a ceremony in Washington at which was published a report carried out by the US Department of State into global human trafficking. The report examines trafficking on a global scale as well as how various governments have acted to root it out.
The report ranks countries in three categories according to how successful they have been in their fight against human trafficking. Finland ranks in the top category which does not however mean that it does not face challenges.
Eva Biaudet acts as Finland’s national representative reporting on human trafficking. In justifying the award, Eva Biaudet and her team were praised for having succeeded in motivating Finland to take the problem of human trafficking seriously and for working to strengthen weaknesses in the government’s programme against human trafficking. Ms Biaudet’s reports have examined the issue boldly and from a number of aspects. Her office has also endeavoured to educate officials in helping victims and in keeping the issue in the public eye.
― This feels great. I’m proud of this recognition and I want to share it with those it also belongs to, the team, my predecessors and the writers of the national reports, Ms Biaudet explained in the Yle News report.
Nine other persons were also awarded in Washington.
