EU’s ICT research unit located on the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi
Lehtikuva / Heikki Saukkomaa Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus is going to become the centre of expertise within the European ICT sector.The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is locating one of its information and communication technologies research units on the new Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Finland. EIT functions as a network, uniting research and educational institutes as well as businesses.
In addition to Aalto University, the founding members of the Finnish unit are VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Nokia. According to EIT's plan in a few years' time there will be several hundred ICT researchers, experts and graduate students working at the Otaniemi unit. The total budget of the Finnish unit for the next five years is approximately 100 million Euros. Approximately 25 per cent of that comes from EIT funding, while the remainder will be sourced from commercial funding, national funding and other EU funding.

In addition to Helsinki, EIT's other ICT network units will be located in Berlin, Eindhoven, Paris and Stockholm. President and CEO of VTT Erkki Leppävuori is prepared to bring the profile of Otaniemi unit to the level of its colleague units, and beyond.
- We want to make Otaniemi the network's hottest innovation cluster, which will attract top companies and talents, says Leppävuori.
