European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) will begin on Sunday, 19th July in Tampere. The festival is a competition organized by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) and it is directed to young European athletes. The event is held biennially both in summer and winter sports under the auspice of the EOC.
The festival was launched in 1991, first under the title Youth Olympic Days. The EYOF gives European youth an opportunity for high level international competition, and a chance for getting to know other cultures.
The programme of the Olympic Festival consists of nine summer sports. These are for instance judo, cycling and gymnastics. The participants of this year's week-long festival are over 2600 from 49 different countries. The President of the Republic of Finland, Tarja Halonen, accompanied by her husband, will take part in the festival's opening ceremony.
Tickets to the events of the EYOF are complimentary and they can be fetched from Musta Pörssi stores, Finnish Sports Federation for Tampere region, or from the EYOF information office, which opens on Sunday.
