Erä-Eero leads the way into predator country

ERÄ-EERO Wolverine is one of the favourites of Erä-Eero's international guests.
Eero Kortelainen from Lieksa spends his working days among predators. His company arranges guided tours into the countryside where the biggest attractions are Finland’s large, wild predators. In the wilderness surrounding Lieksa, visitors get to see bears, wolverines, wolves, lynx and foxes.

- Bears and wolverines are the most popular. Foreign visitors are especially interested in the wolverine as you don’t really come across them outside Finland. Wolves are also in demand, but because of poaching there are fewer of them in these parts, Kortelainen explains.

Most customers for Eero’s business, Erä-Eero, are photographers. They come from all over the world as there are not so many places left where you can photograph wild predators. His services provide a fully equipped field bunkhouse from which the animals can be observed. It also features special openings for photographing the animals without window glass interfering with the shot.

Erä-Eero attempts to give customers authentic wilderness experiences, treating this special environment with the appropriate respect. These photo locations aren’t the sort of places to which you would bring large groups of tourists.

- Our customers are here specifically to see the wild animals. We can’t use these observation areas all the time, or the animals become used to people, their movements and the sounds they make, Kortelainen emphasizes.

There is no guarantee that you’ll see a wild predator on one of these trips.

- I bring people out into the wilderness to experience it just as it is. If you want to be certain of seeing animals, you should go to the zoo. Generally my customers understand this and approach looking at wild animals in the right spirit, he smiles.

Our summer series introduces interesting and innovative companies from all over Finland.
