Environmental issues crucial in EU elections

The most important task for the Finnish Euro Parliamentarians, MEPs, is to concentrate on environmental issues, say Finnish voters. A survey carried out by Taloustutkimus, an independent full service market research house operating in Finland, investigated the priorities of the Finnish people in the 2009 elections of the European Parliament. The survey was commissioned by Alma Media.

The second most important task for MEPs was considered to be in ensuring Finland's special interests. Third most important task was to ensure the rights of consumers and workers. Strengthening the authority of European Union was considered of relatively little importance since it was mentioned by only 10 per cent of the survey participants.

The information service of Aamulehti, a popular daily newspaper, surveyed also the opinions of the MEP-candidates on the same issues. The results were very similar, although the Centre Party and the populist party True Finns, considered ensuring Finland's special interests as more important than concentrating on environmental issues.

The survey asked 959 voters and 115 candidates which were the two most important issues that need to be promoted by the MEPs.
