EMMA receives the Museum Achievement of the Year Prize

The Finnish National Committee of the International Council of Museums, ICOM, has acknowledged the Espoo Museum of Modern Art with the Museum Achievement of the Year Prize. The award was based on the high quality and diverse exhibitions presented by EMMA. The committee presents the awards annually on the International Museum Day on May 18th.

The exhibition programme combines successfully a variety of international celebrities and Finnish artists. In spring 2009 the art work of the Italian Enzo Cucchi were exhibited alongside the photography and video art installation of the Finnish artist Santeri Tuori.

In year 2008 Claude Monet was exhibited side by side with work of Maaria Wirkkala. Also the valuable art collection of the Saastamoinen Foundation has received the place it deserves in the spacious and architecturally impressive exhibition space of the WeeGee house. The permanent exhibition features approximately 500 art works from the collection of the Foundation.

ICOM has also recognized EMMA’s high quality of visitors’ services. Museum pedagogy and the museum’s overall programme takes into consideration the different kinds of visitor groups.

EMMA has also successfully ensured the accessibility of its exhibitions. The excellent services have left a mark on the public. The visitor numbers of EMMA indicate that it is one of the most popular Finnish museums.

The Museum Achievement of the Year Prize is awarded annually by the Finnish National Committee of ICOM, which is an independent non-governmental organization with over 20 000 members in the field of museology coming from over 140 different countries. The Finnish committee of ICOM has awarded the Museum Achievement of the Year Prize since 1992.
