Eija Pessinen is the European Female Inventor of 2009

Pessinen's innovation Relaxbirth is a device which supports the body of the delivering mother, allowing her to give birth in a natural position. The device has already been tested in a number of maternity clinics.
The Relaxbirth device is intended to increase the well-being of the mother and the baby by making the delivery process faster, safer, easier and more comfortable. The goal of the Relaxbirth -concept is also to increase the number of normal vaginal births and to reduce stress, fears and complications related to childbirth.
Relaxbirth -delivery support resembles gym equipment. Previously a weightlifter, Eija Pessinen admits the connection, but says that the final appearance of the device is a coincidence.
- The device helps the delivering mother to make use of the strength of her whole body. This results in babies being born vigorous and healthy, says Pessinen.
A winner in the competition's Innovator - category was Maija Itkonen's table, which recharges mobile phones and laptops. The table's Powerkiss-technology chucks out traditional corded rechargers.
The jury paid attention also on the commercialization of the invention. Both, Relaxbirth and Powerkiss are finished products, which have already been marketed both in Finland and overseas. Both women aim to turn their inventions into great business.
The competition was organized by the European Women Inventors & Innovators Network, EUWIIN. The network works towards building opportunities for creative, inventive and innovative women across Europe, and promotes invention and innovation in the workplace, in the business context, in learning environments and at home.
