Eco Urban Living turns Espoo into an eco-conscious city

Valmet Automotive Valmet Automotive’s Uusikaupunki factory has been manufacturing the Norwegian Think City electric car since 2009.
The City of Espoo, Valmet Automotive, Fortum and Nokia have launched a new Eco Urban Living initiative, which promotes the use of electric cars. The aim of the initiative is to advance technology development and create an eco-conscious living environment in the Otaniemi – Keilaniemi – Tapiola area.

The goal of Espoo is to create, in cooperation between different actors, a Living Lab  environment, which will implement city planning with consideration to the tightening  environmental stipulations. The project is closely connected to the Aalto University and the Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT, with a common aim of turning Espoo into an internationally leading innovation hub for electric motoring.

A coollaborator in the project, Valmet has made strong investments in the development of electric cars.

– Our close collaboration with companies like Garia, Think and Fisker Automotive demands us to follow actively what kind of new requirements the users of electric vehicles have, says President of Valmet Automotive Ilpo Korhonen.

Nokia has already identified a market niche in Espoo’s famously challenging city structure, and has created a software, which can help anyone to find their destination, whether moving about on foot, by electric car or by any other means.

– Nokia's free pedestrian and car navigation software has been downloaded more than 10 million times since it was launched in January this year. The Eco Urban Living initiative will provide us with excellent opportunities to demonstrate how Nokia’s services will revolutionize navigation and enable sustainable choices in everyday life, says Vesa Luiro, Director, Automotive Services, Nokia.

As for Fortum, the company wants the Eco Urban Living project to encourage the rapid development of charging point infrastructure for electric cars.

The Eco Urban Living project is coordinated by Synocus Group. The Group’s Chairman Johan Wallin believes that there are good opportunities for the partners to create an internationally recognized demonstration city that increases the attractiveness of Espoo as an innovation hub.
