Domestic travel on the rise
MEK Finnish domestic leisure travel is often headed to the summerhouse.Domestic travel within Finland increased considerably in June. According to Statistics Finland Finnish residents made 2.8 million leisure trips including at least one overnight stay in the month of June. The number is 10 per cent more than the leisure trips done during the corresponding period in the previous year.
Most, 2,4 million of the domestic leisure trips included free overnight accommodation at one's own summerhouse, with relatives or friends or in some other type of free accommodation.
Finns made also 446,000 overnight leisure trips abroad in June. As many as 345,000 of these trips included an overnight stay in the country of destination. One sixth of these trips were headed to Estonia.
A big hit in the month of June were boat cruises in the Baltic Sea. The total number of these cruises increased by 28 per cent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
The preliminary data are based on Statistics Finland's Finnish Travel Survey, which was carried out in July and is based on interviews of 1,427 permanent residents in Finland within the age range of 15 to 74.
