Direct train from Finland to Central Europe

SCX
The dream of travelling by direct train from Finland all the way to Central Europe may be possible as soon as the future visions of the railway companies of Russia, Austria, Slovakia and Ukraine become realized, writes website moskova.info.

The companies are planning to construct a railway line, which runs all the way from Russia to Austria. The implementation of the plan requires the railway width to be built to the Russian gauge, 1 520 mm, according to the Russian standards.

The railway companies of the four countries are planning to establish a joint enterprise, which would be in charge of the construction of the 600 kilometre railway line. The railway line, suited for Russian trains, would run through Ukraine and Slovakia to the Austrian capital city Vienna. The new railway line would cost approximately 2-3 billion Euros.

If the enterprise is realized, passengers could in principle travel directly from Finland all the way to Central Europe. The width of the Finnish railway tracks are the same as in Russia. Central European railway gauges have a standard width of 1 435 mm.

The Journey from Helsinki, through Russia to Vienna would last approximately one and half days.
