ZenRobotics, a recycling company utilising artificial intelligence, will supply the Belgian company Container Maes with the world’s first solar-powered robotic recycling system. The transaction is valued at more than a million euros.

The system being delivered, ZenRobotics Recycler, is a robot-based system utilising machine learning which reclaims valuable objects and raw materials from the waste stream. It is able to sort wood, stone and metal fractions from construction and demolition waste, for example. The recycling company Containers Maes intends to produce the energy required by the system using solar panels.

— The future of recycling lies in innovative technologies and the efficiency gains they bring. ZenRobotics Recycler is certainly the best available technology in the field, so it is a no-brainer to go with it, says Werner Willemoons, Environmental Director at Containers Maes.

The system will be delivered to recycling company Containers Maes’ plant, located in Tessenderlo, Belgium, between October and December 2012.

— This is a significant coup for ZenRobotics: our first international delivery is to Belgium, a central and extremely desirable market, says a pleased Juho Malmberg, CEO of ZenRobotics.

ZenRobotics, based in Helsinki, Finland, was founded in 2007. According to the company, the artificial intelligence it has created is the highest technology ever seen in the recycling field.
