Border without Borders is celebrated in Lapland

Already 200 years have passed since the drawing up of the border between Finland and Sweden. The Hamina Peace Treaty was signed in 1809. The anniversary is celebrated on both sides of the border in the delta of the Tornio-river in Lapland.

Church bells will ring on both sides of the border on Thursday September 17th at 7 pm Finnish time. This is done on the commemoration day of the signing of the Hamina Peace Treaty. The anniversary is visible all over Finland, as well as in meetings at a political level between Finland and Russia.

Bishops from Luleå and Oulu gather together for a commemorial event in Muonio on Saturday September 19th. Bishops Samuel Salmi and Hans Stiglund will publish a joint manifesto for advancing border cooperation. The events of Rajaton Raja, Border without Borders- commemorial weekend are free to the public, excluding the Bishops ceremonial reception.

During the three-day event several seminars and fairs are held in the north. The public will also get a chance to enjoy for instance rafting and hiking.
