Biohit launches Acetium to prevent exposure to carcinogenic acetaldehyde
BiohitBiotechnology company Biohit Oyj in collaboration with researchers from the University of Helsinki has developed a product, which helps to prevent the exposure of the gastrointestinal tract to carcinogenic acetaldehyde. The over-the-counter Acetium capsules are intended to be launched in Finnish pharmacies this spring.
According to Biohit the effective ingredient in Acetium capsules is L-cysteine, which effectively binds on to the stomach's acetaldehyde molecule and renders it inactive. Acetaldehyde is an established risk factor for oesophageal and gastric cancer
– The microbes, bacteria and yeast in the gastrointestinal tract generate carcinogenic acetaldehyde from alcohol and sugar locally in the mouth and in an acid-free stomach. In addition to that, many nutrients and alcoholic beverages themselves contain mutagenic concentrations of acetaldehyde, says Professor Mikko Salaspuro from the University of Helsinki.
The primary target group for Acetium is persons suffering from gastric mucosal injury and a functional disorder and the resulting acid-free stomach caused by Helicobacter pylori infection or an autoimmune disease. In Finland, the number of estimated sufferers reaches nearly 100,000.
The product will be launched in the international markets latest by 2011.
