Biodiversity.fi provides information on the state of Finnish nature
Sami Perttilä Biodiversity online service reveals for instance that approximately a third of Finland’s roads are forest roads. The indicators published on the website are significant, since they are also the basis for decisions made for improving the state of nature. The indicators, which have been developed in close cooperation by Finnish environmental research organisations, public authorities, universities and non-governmental organisations, have been chosen to provide the most accurate picture of the state of Finnish nature.
The website reveals for instance that Finland has not met the European Union goal of reversing the decline of biodiversity by 2010. The speed of losing Finnish biodiversity has however slowed down in the past decade.
– We must intervene more courageously in order to change the situation. All the societal sectors must take biodiversity into consideration. We have to remember that changes in biodiversity are often slow, and for this reason we need to work persistently, says Research manager Heikki Toivonen from SYKE.
Especially species, which used to thrive in ordinary swamps and agricultural environments, are struggling because of trenching and the specialisation of agricultural practises.
However, human impact has also been positive in aiding species, which have previously been threatened. These species are for instance the White-backed Woodpecker and the White-tailed Eagle.
