Bio-technology sector grows in Oulu

The British bio-technology specialist, ValiRx expands its operations to Finland. The company will start off by employing about five specialists in the field.

The main focus of ValiRx Finland Plc is in new technologies which benefit cancer care. The bio-technology sector is growing in Oulu where there are already nearly 50 companies utilizing and benefiting from bio-technology.

The wellbeing of companies focusing on bio-technology has been a special interest for the Oulu region. Director of Oulu Innovation, Pauliina Pikkujämsä says that Oulu has put considerable effort into attracting new international companies to the region.

- Our Invest in Oulu-services offer a very concrete support package making it easy for companies considering a move to Oulu. This package can help them to establish themselves here, notes Pikkujämsä.

ValiRx has already started cooperation with Oulu University Hospital. The research promises a new and more comprehensive diagnostics of prostate cancer and the results are esteemed to have great significance for cancer treatment in the future.

- We offer competitive testing and piloting environments for new technologies, and active cooperation with the university, Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT, the hospital and other operators in the bio-technology field, in which many Finnish and international companies are interested, comments the director of HealthBio-programme at Oulu Innovations, Tuula Palmén.
