Baltic Sea Action Summit 2010 aims to save the Baltic Sea
ImagebankPresident of the Republic of Finland, Tarja Halonen, Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and Chairman of the Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) Ilkka Herlin launched their joint initiative, the Baltic Sea Action Summit 2010, on Tuesday, 19 May 2009.
The goal is to bring together the strength of different public and private bodies to establish strong co-operation in working towards improving the marine conditions of the Baltic Sea. The most visible part of the programme is the Baltic Sea Action Summit in February 2010, which will offer a platform for heads of state, companies, business leaders, NGOs and individual citizens.
- Saving the Baltic Sea calls for concrete action. The Governments and other public actors can make significant contributions but cannot do everything. Innovations and best practices to save the Baltic Sea will be produced in comprehensive cooperation, stated President Tarja Halonen at the opening session.
The companies participating in the Baltic Sea initiative donate their own know-how, products and funds for the project. They have also made a commitment to developing operations which are environmentally friendlier to the Baltic Sea.
The most severe problems of the Baltic Sea result from eutrophication and the busy, rapidly growing marine traffic.
