Bag of the Year 2009 generates electricity for the ecological consumer
MTV3/Helmi/Emmi MaaranenThe new FOKKA-bags have been designed so that they generate electricity for consumer electronics. The bags, which are made of recycled canvas, have an attached thin, bendy and weather-proof solar panel. They are also equipped with a small battery and an interface, so the bag can easily recharge a MP3-player, a mobile phone or a laptop.
The designers aspired to combine ecological recycling and the generation of clean electricity enabled by the latest technology. The bag collection is named after the jib of a sailing boat, which in Finnish is known as "fokka". The collection consists of three products: small handbag which recharges a mobile phone and a MP3-player, a laptop bag with a solar panel for consumer electronics and another laptop bag, which is equipped with four solar panels for recharging the batteries of laptops and cameras.
The designers or the FOKKA-collection, Martina and Niklas Löfberg won The Bag Designer of the Year 2009-award in August. The designers wanted to introduce the market to a new kind of product, one which would meet the needs of the ecologically informed consumers, who attempt to save the environment by their shopping choices. The jury acknowledged the elaborate design and trend-awareness of the product. The Bag Designer of the Year 2009 was awarded by the Finnish Fair Foundation.
