The British magazine Monocle has chosen Helsinki as the second most liveable city in the world. Last year Helsinki made the top spot, but this year was ousted by Zurich, Switzerland.

According to Monocle’s latest assessment, Helsinki is a creative and innovative city. It receives praise for its impressive projects such as the new metro line and the conversion of its harbours into attractive residential areas. According to Monocle, Helsinki is “a city where good ideas quickly come to life”.

Zurich is applauded by the magazine for its architecture and clean living. Monocle calls it “a well-balanced city” that other countries could learn from. The top five this year also included Copenhagen (3), Vienna (4) and Munich (5).

Monocle is a British lifestyle magazine focusing on international issues, fashion and design. The magazine ranks the 25 most liveable cities each year. In 2010 Helsinki was fifth on the list.
