Artek opens a showroom in New York City

Artek Artek turns 75 this year.
Finnish furniture and design company Artek opened a new showroom in New York City yesterday. Despite the recession Artek has set sail for the American design market.

– One has to be brave, particularly during a crisis. There are more prospects here than elsewhere, says Managing Director of Artek Mirkku Kullberg in daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

The furniture company which is currently owned by Swedish capital investor Proventus has been encouraged to expand to the international markets. In addition to New York, Artek has also opened a showroom in Stockholm. According to the Kullberg results from the New York unit are expect to be seen in a year’s time.

Artek has well-known clients, such as Apple, the multinational designer and manufacturer of consumer electronics and software.

Mirrku Kullberg plans also small scale production in the United States. For instance the making of the surfaces of chairs and tables could be entrusted to American carpenters.

Artek was originally set up in 1935 by the world famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino Aalto.
