Artek, the Finnish design house, is opening its new European headquarters A Mondial Home in the German capital of Berlin. The new headquarters resides in the building which was previously home to daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, and which is an architectural landmark in Berlin. According to an Artek press release, this move is a “clear signal that Artek is headed in the direction of the broader European market.”
— Artek is ready for international expansion, viewing the brand from a wider perspective and communicating with a new generation, comments Mirkku Kullberg, CEO of Artek.
— Now is the right time for Artek to come to Berlin. At the same time that Artek understands the value of great classic collections from Aalto and Tapiovaara, the company invests in young, contemporary designers for fresh looks and designs, says Reiner Heublein, the new Sales Director of Artek Deutschland.
Artek furniture is also being exhibited in Berlin in a show called “Stool 60 Turns Art” in the gallery of Andreas Murkudis. As a way of honouring the 80th birthday of Alvar Aalto’s design icon, Mike Meiré has put together a minimal and playful installation of six Aalto stools. According to an Artek press release, the exhibition features Meiré’s multicolored ideas about Stool 60 “classics with a contemporary twist”.
