Anti-bullying programme KiVa wins European Crime Prevention competition

The Finnish anti-bullying programme KiVa received the first prize in the European Crime Prevention Award (ECPA) from the Swedish Minister for Justice Beatrice Ask. The award was presented to the programme co-leaders, Professor of Psychology Christina Salmivalli and the Director of the Centre for Learning Research Elisa Poskiparta on December 9th in Stockholm.

Minister Ask emphasized that crime prevention especially among children and young people, and the diffusion of good practices is of particular importance in the European Union.

The KiVa -programme has been found to reduce bullying at school and increase school safety and wellbeing at school in all the comprehensive grades. The risk of being bullied in the schools taking part in the programme is half of that in the control group schools.

The programme, which has been funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education reaches already about 300.000 elementary school pupils. The programme is intended to be kept as a permanent practice in the participating schools.

Seventeen finalists were nominated by their home countries and competed for the title of Europe's best crime prevention project on the theme young people and crime in cyberspace, schools and recruitment to criminal groups. KiVa -programme was chosen to the competition by the National Council for Crime Prevention in Finland.

Every year the European Crime Prevention Competition rewards a project which has proven to reduce every-day crime. The awards are presented by the country holding the Presidency of the EU.

I was bullied in the University.I told about it to policeman Jukka Suvisuo.We must fight for better Universities too.I was studying Italian and French in the University of Turku.Bullying made me very depressive.I did Jane to leave my studies because of that.
