Anna Valtonen appointed as Rector of Umeå Institute of Design

Aalto University Anna Valtonen is the new rector of Umeå Institute of Design

Finnish Anna Valtonen has been appointed as the new rector of Umeå Institute of Design. The institute is one of the world's leading education providers in the design industry. As the only Nordic institution, it has continuously maintained its position among the 30 top quality academies of the world on the Business Week's global listing.

- During the last decades different new systems have made industrial design more complicated. Design has changed since the times of Tapio Wirkkala, and today we are speaking of an extremely multifaceted field, commented Valtonen during Lahti Science Day on Tuesday. Her intention is to bring together the assets of both, Finnish and Swedish design.

Valtonen has worked previously for instance as the Head of Nokia Design Foresight, and as a member of the Board at Aalto University, which is a merger between the Helsinki School of Economics, the University of Art and Design Helsinki and the Helsinki University of Technology. The experiences that Valtonen has had at Aalto University have been positive. She has witnessed people, who have previously resisted change, having suddenly got all excited about the amalgamation of artists and designers with engineers and economists in their communities.

Design is an important field in today's technology processes. Very few people know that Nokia has up to 350 industrial designers solely for designing data terminals.
