Rovio’s smash hit Angry Birds game has won in two categories at the Toy of the Year awards in New York.

Angry Birds picked up the Property of the Year award for the successful promotion of its brand throughout the industry.

In addition, the Angry Birds Knock on Wood Game made by toy manufacturer Mattel won in the category Game of the Year for children’s board, card, CD-ROM or electronic games.

The Toy of the Year Awards, now in its twelfth year, is administered by the Toy Industry Association, the trade association for producers and importers of toys and youth entertainment products sold in North America, representing 550 companies who account for about 85 per cent of domestic toy sales.

Award winners were selected with the input of consumers, retailers, media and members of the toy industry.

The finalists were selected from nearly 600 products and properties submitted for consideration. Nomination committees comprised of academics, journalists and toy trend experts, play therapists, toy inventors and designers, and toy retailers narrowed the field to 77 finalists.

Since its launch in 2009, smartphone game Angry Birds has taken the world by storm.
