Alex Karttunen, 11, wins international See the Bigger Picture -photography competition
Seethebiggerpicture.org Alex Karttunen: Spirit of the bottleFinnish 11-year-old Alex Karttunen is one of the winners of the See the Bigger Picture- photography competition. The competition was part of The Green Wave, a youth engagement programme of the United Nations' Convention on Biological Diversity, encouraging young people to learn about the complexity of life on earth and its role in their future. The competition was carried out together with Airbus and National Geographic Society. The campaign has been designated to encourage young people to familiarize themselves with the diversity in life.
The competition had over 2350 young participants from 99 countries. Three prize winners were selected alongside five global winners. A further 20 young people were also awarded honorable mentions for their impressive entries.
The eight prize winners will get a chance to visit the headquarters of National Geographic in Washington D.C. this December. They will also get a chance to familiarize themselves with some of the sights of Washington D.C. and improve their photography skills with instruction and inspiration from the photographer Joel Sartore.
Alex is already very excited about the journey to Washington, although realizing his victory in the competition still takes some time. Alex's entry in the competition was taken in Thailand, featuring a hermit crab, which has adopted the neck of a broken glass bottle as its shell.
The CEO of Airbus, Tom Enders praised the high quality of the participating works. According to him the photographs reflected amazingly the wonderful variety of different animal and plant species on Earth.
