Aalto University’s Luukku house won the first tournament of Solar Decathlon Europe 2010
sdfinland.com– This is an exceptionally high-quality timber house. A house, which could have only been built with Finnish knowhow, said the Chairman of the competition jury Glenn Murcut.
The Solar Decathlon has challenged eighteen interdisciplinary university teams from seven countries to build energy-efficient houses, which are evaluated in the following categories: architecture; building and technology; solar energy systems; energy balance; indoor air condition; functionality; communication networks and social media; productization and marketing potential, innovativeness and sustainable development.
The theme of the first tournament was architecture. Full points were given to three universities, which were Aalto University, Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña and Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
The general evaluation of the first tournament was directed towards the quality of the building’s architecture, use of materials, passive energy solutions, and clarity.
The Luukku house was appraised for its versatile and honest use of timber; natural and sympathetic, but not flashy, architecture; the poise and high quality of the building’s structural solutions and the good quality of the building’s construction.
The results of the entire Solar Decathlon will be published on June 27th 2010.
