Aalto-Tongji Design factory opened in Shanghai

Finnish Aalto University and Chinese Tongji University have established a new cooperation platform, Aalto-Tongji Design Factory, in Shanghai. The factory, which focuses on innovative design, research and cooperation, is located on the Zhangwu Campus of Tongji University.

Aalto-Tongji Design Factory is the first concrete step towards a broader cooperation between the two universities. On the opening day, the President of Aalto University Tuula Teeri and the President of Tongji University Pei Gang signed an agreement for the implementation of the Sino-Finnish Centre.

The goal and mission of the cooperation is to build a better world to live in. The two presidents agree that the 21st century will be a century of design and innovation. The new era needs new approaches of human centered innovation.

- To achieve this and go even further, international, transcultural and interdisciplinary collaboration is of utmost importance, said Tuula Teeri and Pei Gang.

The most important aim of Aalto-Tongji Design factory is to develop product and service development-related education, research and interaction with companies and other actors in the society. Students, researchers and the representatives of industry and commerce will cooperate in practicing and developing methods for creative problem solving, prototyping, practical experimenting and the creation of a better user experience.

The basic idea of Aalto University, to establish interaction between technology and science, art, design and economics, are essential in the functions of the Design Factory
