A new generation of organic products
BIOFERME Bioferme won won the 2009 Tähtituote prize for its Yosa organic smoothie.- Our present product range is based mainly on fermentation. Yosa was the world’s first product made through fermenting oats with probiotic milk and bifido bacteria, explains Ms Merja Scharlin.
Bioferme has put a lot of development into applying the fermentation process to the so-called non-dairy products. Traditionally fermentation has been used mainly with dairy produce.
Since the 90s Bioferme has been single-mindedly expanding its product range. From originally producing fruit juices and fermented cabbage, the company has become over the years Finland’s leading manufacturer of domestic organic products.

- The demand for organic products has increased considerably over recent years. Expanding our product range has been influenced by the increased availability of raw produce; today you can obtain organic produce in a totally different way from before, Ms. Scharlin notes.
Merja Scharlin believes demand for organic products will continue to be strong in the future and the health benefits of organic have become a central trend in the business.
- There’s more and more information all the time and, for example, the use of probiotics continues to increase. Changes happen quickly both in consumer trends and in the science. The challenge is to combine this knowledge with customer taste in just the right way, emphasises Ms. Scharlin.
