Good News from Tue, 06 July, 2010:

A flash of light makes crossings safer

Välkky enhances safety at crossings and traffic flow.
The idea for the Välkky warning module sprung three years ago from breaking street lamps. Now the product is on the market and its future looks bright, even on the international stage, according to its inventor Jouni Hänninen from Havainne Oy.

In 2004 he began experimenting with hot-dip zinc coated street lamps which, according to the news, were breaking because of corrosion and environment-induced damage.

- I got the idea from the lamppost protection. And from an idea of a passive indication, it evolved into an active warning with the addition of a traffic sign and LED lights, explains Mr Hänninen.

Välkky is fitted to the signs indicating a crossing (alt. crosswalk) on both sides of the road.  When a pedestrian or a cyclist enters the motion detection area, the blue and white LED lights begin to flash, alerting the approaching driver. Välkky can also be used to enhance safety on low-trafficked pathways, tunnels and crossings.

Although a pedestrian crossing (alt. crosswalk) is the safest place to cross the street, 45% of pedestrian accidents occur there.

- Välkky has proved itself effective. When the speed of the approaching car is reduced by 5 per cent, the number of fatal collisions is reduced by 20 and injuries by 10 per cent, affirms Mr Hänninen.

- Välkky offers cities and municipalities with an effective and flexible alternative for enhancing road safety. Välkky also extends the service life of traffic signs and lampposts which in itself creates a saving, notes Mr Hänninen.

During the summer Välkky will be tested throughout Finland and mass production will begin in the autumn. Välkky is the first product from Havainne Oy, which was founded in 2009, and further innovative, road safety enhancing products and services are expected in the future.
